HOBNAIL CAFE

The Hobnail Café, inside the Fox Glacier Guiding building, feels like a cosy mountain hut, complete with wood finished walls, and a firebox that radiates warmth in winter. Alpine landscapes adorn the walls, and a black and white photograph of a plane landed on the beach at Jackson Bay, surrounded by pack horses, offers a glimpse of the historic West Coast lifestyle.

Café Manger Karen James and her team provide hearty breakfasts for visitors about to go on a glacier adventure, and ‘quick food’ so they can refuel afterwards. The tasty meals and baked treats are prepared on site, and the glass cases are kept well stocked all day. The blackboard meals provide for those with a little more time to relax, and the coffee is always hot and very addictive.

Tour guides appreciate that their bus load can ’grab and go’ in twenty minutes. Families are also given a warm welcome, and the café is a perfect place to dry off and warm up little hands on a cold day. When the sun is shining, your whole tribe can sit outside around a Maxi Duncan’s hand crafted kahikatea table.
