Glacier Helicopters
Franz Josef Glacier
New Zealand is home to spectacular mountain peaks, deep mysterious lakes and creeping, icy glaciers. This is the perfect environment for flying in, and walking on the Franz Josef Glacier. The rugged West Coast is hemmed between the wild Tasman Sea rolling in to its western coastline and the vast Southern Alps to the east. It is remote and sparsely populated, boasting two of the world’s most accessible glaciers, the Franz Josef and the Fox Glacier.
Glacier Helicopters pioneered helicopter snow landings in 1970, and every year they have flown thousands of people up over the glaciers to explore the Southern Alps. With four European Squirrel AS350’s, five pilots who are specially trained in alpine flying, and a ten strong ground crew they offer ‘Exceptional Customer Service - Every Flight’.
The Squirrel AS350 can fly up to six passengers at once, and each flight includes a snow landing. You can choose from a 20 minute or 40 minute flight path, and charter flights into the backcountry are also available.
Passengers are often so overwhelmed by their flight-seeing adventure that they can be found walking around the Franz Josef Glacier Village in a trance like state afterwards. Having witnessed their pilot simultaneously fly the helicopter, land in snow, and deliver an in-depth commentary, they often ask if professional radio presentations skills are part of the pilots training package.
You also know you have picked the right operator when Glacier Helicopters have been the company of choice for visiting celebrities such as Josh Hartnett, Jack Osborne and the Minister of Conservation.
